Welcome Home Reception for the Hong Kong, China Delegation to the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games
The 33-strong Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games Hong Kong, China Delegation including 18 athletes feted at a Welcome Home Reception on 3 September 2014 at Government House.
The reception officiated by The Hon. C. Y. Leung, GBM, GBS, JP, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, The Hon. Tsang Tak Sing, GBS, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, and Mr. Timothy T. T. Fok, GBS, JP, President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China cum International Olympic Committee Member.
Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games Young Ambassador Stephanie Au Hoi-shun also attended the reception as the mistress of ceremony.
Hong Kong finished with an outstanding haul of two gold medals, four silvers medals, and one bronze medal surpassing the two silver medals won in the inaugural Games in Singapore four years ago.
The two gold medals were won by Ng Tsz Yau who partnered a Malaysian in the mixed doubles in badminton while the men’s fencing team of Albert Chien Kei Hsu and Ryan Choi Chun Yin won in the mixed event partnering Japanese and Korean athletes. Siobhan Bernadette Haughey who won a silver medal in the women’s 100 metres freestyle event as well as she broke the Hong Kong record in the 200M individual medley with her time of two minutes 13.21 seconds and granted another silver medal was in the limelight. Apart from Haughey’s medals, Hong Kong fencer Ryan Choi Chun Yin won a silver medal in the men’s foil event while Doo Hoi Kem won a silver in the women’s singles in table tennis. She also won a bronze in the mixed team event alongside Hung Ka Tak.
“It is a remarkable achievement by our athletes who are returning home with seven medals,” said proud Mr. Timothy T. T. Fok. “Their success has enhanced Hong Kong’s status as an Asian vibrant city.” Mr. Timothy T. T. Fok thanked The Hon. Tsang Tak Sing, Secretary for Home Affairs for visiting Nanjing and taking the time to encourage the Hong Kong Delegation. “The Federation will continue to promote cooperation between the Government and the local sports sector to develop sports. We are confident that we will achieve even more success in international multi-sports Games,” Mr. Timothy T. T. Fok said.
Fok added, “My heartfelt congratulations to the Delegation and wishing our athletes continuous success at the forthcoming Asian Games in Incheon this month.”
